30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 29

Day 29: "Hairy". I saw this guy at the beach once. He was awesome.

Actor Evolution: Sigourney Weaver

Let's face it, in the realm of Sci-Fi/fantasy, one lady rules them all.

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 28

Day 28- Disease/Virus. As a big fan of Monty Python, it was a pleasure to draw this guy. What's your favorite Monty Python bit? Leave a note in the comments!

Paranorman Painting Method

Hey guys, I actually made this tutorial to show my girlfriend how I paint in Photoshop, but I thought some of you out there may enjoy looking at it as well.

Here's the early stage of the art- just a doodle I made in Flash.

I export as a png, and bring it into Photoshop. I turn the opacity down, set the layer to multiply, and being painting flat color.

When all the flats are done, I turn off the layer of the guide art. Now I begin rendering.

This is my favorite part. As you can see, I don't model things as they might appear in real life. I keep it somewhat flat. This is just a personal style approach. Here I made the decision to turn the zombie's mouth up, as if he were smiling, as he is not truly evil, just misunderstood.

Sometimes to give my art more visual interest, I like to add rim lights. The one on the zombie is pretty intense, but I thought it added to the horror of the moment.

Finished the zombie, now I'm rendering Norman. I threw a blue subtle rim light on his back to pop him out from the background, since he was kind of falling into the shadows. I usually hit faces with a very light red to give them a little flush to their noses and cheeks. It helps them look more alive. After I'm satisfied with the painting, I grab some kind of texture, and place it behind the characters. Usually I set the layer to multiply, and turn the opacity down to about 20%, but it depends on the illustration. All told, this painting took a little over an hour to do. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask. I hope you found this interesting, and thanks for reading! FINAL PIECE:

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 27

Day 27- The Living Dead. I guess this was just an excuse to practice digital painting and to draw one of my favorite zombie movies of all time: "Shaun of the Dead".

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 26

Day 26- Draw yourself in another artist's style. For this I chose Scott C, and as you can see, I'm locked in my own "Great Showdown" with my mortal enemy.

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 25

Day 25- Inspirational teacher/mentor. I am mostly a self taught artist, and although I did major in art in college, 90% of what I currently know about art has come from serious study on my own. This picture is a tribute to the beginnings of my fascination with cartooning. Copying comic books and cartoon characters is how my interest in art began, and is still going strong.

Classics of Crap Volume 42- Robot Monster

Wow, this movie is crap. I mean, scraping the bottom of the barrel crap. But holy cow, is it ever funny. Robot Monster is one of the those legendary bad movies that everyone seems to have heard of, but no one seems to have ever seen. Made in 1953, for $20,000 (In 3-D, no less!) this movie is dumb moviemaking at its finest. The premise, as it were, is that Earth as we know it is destroyed. Boom. Done. There are only 8 survivors left, hiding in a cave. It is up to the evil Ro-Man to destroy the last surviving members of the human race by hand. Did I mention that Ro-Man, the evil conquering alien is a gorilla wearing a diving helmet? Well, he is. And he brought with him evil bubble making machines of DOOM! Oh man. This movie is just plain awful, but like Plan 9 from Outer Space, it's one of the most remembered crap movies from the 1950's.

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 24

Day 24- A celebrity you dislike. No one quite irks me like George Lucas and his endless tinkering of my beloved Star Wars movies. Knock it off already! (And release the original cuts on Blu-ray). Thank you.

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 21

Day 21- Draw yourself at 99 years old.  I plan on cultivating a healthy tuft of ear hair when I get old. I will be the envy of my old folk's home.

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 20

Day 20-Pokeman. Ash and Pikachu have a special relationship. It makes me think of the infamous Nerd and Cat picture that took the Internet by storm a few years ago:

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 19

Day 19- Mascot. I wanted to depict the most famous fast food mascots, but in a unique way. I thought as Masters of the Universe Characters might be just the thing. I just bought some Masters toys this weekend, and I guess I had He-Man on my mind. :S

Kurt Russell is the Man!

I'd like everyone to take a minute to think about how awesome Kurt Russell is. Why isn't he in more movies?? PS. I was *this* close to drawing Captain Ron, hehe.

Weekend Life Drawing

Gotta try and keep my life drawings sharp. These were quick poses done at Art Center late night drawing jam.

30 Day Drawing Challenge Day 16

Day 16- A scary moment. I can't think of a time I felt more anxiety than watching the original Poltergeist as a child. I was squirming in my seat it was so intense. The worst bit was the guy whose face melts off in the bathroom mirror. Dear God, that stayed, burned into my mind, for years. This picture is my therapy.
